Motif Notation Course

Motif Notation is a symbolic system for recording movement, closely related to Labanotation.

Both Motif Notation and Labanotation are systems used to document movement, but they differ in focus and application.  Labanotation is comprehensive and detailed system designed to record dances and any movement, including specific body movements, directions, levels, timing, and paths.  It is highly precise and often used for preserving choreographies and reconstructing them for performance or educational purposes.

In contrast, Motif Notation focuses on capturing the core elements or motifs of movement, emphasizing expression and thematic qualities rather than detailed technicalities.  It serves as a versatile tool for observing, discussing, analyzing, teaching, and creating movement.  Motif Notation is widely used in fields such as dance education, choreography, movement therapy, performance analysis, and other fields where a simplified or thematic approach to documenting and expressing movement is needed.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the principles and applications of Motif Notation.

The CURRICULUM ENCOMPASSES various aspects of Motif Notation, including but not limited to:

  • Direction
  • Effort
