Description of work

Leaving Capulets takes place at the entrance to the Capulets’ home. A curtain, parted in the center shows the entrance. Two curtained transports are placed to the right and left of the entrance. Each will be used to carry a female guest. Each carrier has two long poles used to lift it, with four men who are resting on the ground next to a pole position. They are waiting to carry the guest.

When the lights come up, two children enter from the home. They alert the carriers that the guests are about to leave. Carriers stand up. Guests begin to leave the party. First, four couples dance out. Romeo comes next, followed by a man and a woman who argue. Another woman follows. After that, two women come out, followed by Mercutio and Benvolio with their mandolins. Mercutio goes to the stage right transport, peeks behind the curtain, and appears to have been slapped. Tybalt comes out, sword in hand. He chases Benvolio off-stage left. He then moves toward Mercutio who pretends his mandolin is a weapon. At that pont, Lord and Lady Capulet stop Tybalt and bring him back inside as the transports leave.

Costume Information

All costumes are styled based on Quattrocento paintings of the 1400s in Italy.  These Gothic to Renaissance long gowns combine with men’s doublets and tights.  Only Juliet and her 6 friends were pointe shoes. Romeo and his friends have ballet shoes, but other men wear shoes/boots. The nurse wears a headdress.
